The New Year

I have a lot happening in the first half of the new year on the book front. In March my historical mystery novel, Murder in the Museo Kircheriano, will be published by Mystic Publishers, and in April the third book in the Omnipodge Trilogy, A Mystery Yarn, will be published by Encircle Publications. I have two presentations to book clubs in January and will attend the Left Coast Crime Conference in the Seattle area in April.

Violin Concert

Our 8-year-old grandson participated in his first third-grade violin concert this week. Every Tuesday the kids practice on the violin, and this was the first time to show their families the results.

The Snowball Effect

One of the things I like about doing author events is the snowball effect. A recent example is that I attended Men of Mystery in November in Long Beach, CA. As a result, I’ve been invited to two book clubs to give presentations in January, one of which selected one of my books for their monthly read.

Christmas Tree Decorated

This week we got out Christmas tree decorated with the able assistance of our grandson. We listened to Christmas music and put ornaments on the tree. A fun project.

Holiday Season

With Thanksgiving over and the leftovers eaten, we’re now getting ready for the December festivities. My wife has taken down the turkey decorations, and we’ve started putting up Christmas decorations. The tree with lights is up. Next step, put on the ornaments. We publish a holiday newsletter and that’s at the printer, so we’ll soon be able to mail it out. We’re old school and still mail vs. email our newsletter. Whatever tradition you follow, have a wonderful family celebration in December.

Happy Thanksgiving

We’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving on Friday this year with two of our kids, two grandkids, our daughter-in-law and my wife’s brother. It will be a low key Thanksgiving but a chance to get together and give thanks.

Men of Mystery Conference

Here are some pictures from the Men of Mystery Conference two weeks ago. I gave my one-minute pitch on the first two books of my Omnipodge Trilogy, Old Detectives Home and Last Gasp Motel. I signed books, met new people and had a chance to chat with old friends.

Parent Teacher Conferences

I recently attended the parent teacher conference with my daughter for my third-grade grandson. The teacher had very good feedback on my grandson’s strengths and areas for improvement. I was impressed with her professionalism and knowledge of my grandson. Her enthusiasm in doing what’s best for the students has passed through because my grandson is enjoying school.

Halloween

To prepare for Halloween, we purchase a large stash of candy. There is a carnival at a park two blocks from our house on Halloween evening, and we get a huge number of kids trick-or-treating on the way to the park or on the way back. This year we set an all-time record for number of kids coming to our door: at least 334. It could have been more, but since we live on a corner and have two doors to man for giving out treats, I race back and forth between doors and may have missed counting a few. We survived with a small amount of candy left after the evening’s festivities, and I got in a lots of exercise racing between doors.

Cover Picture for Murder in the Museo Kircheriano

I have a historical mystery novel titled, Murder in the Museo Kircheriano, which will be published by Mystic Publishers in March, 2024. Here’s a short blurb: Under the backdrop of the Vatican in the mid seventeenth century and its many political factions, Jesuit priest Athanasius Kircher, his assistant Filippo, and recent convert Queen Christina of Sweden work to find a murderer. With every intrigue uncovered the mystery grows and the body count piles up—but the trio will not be stopped. The drip, drip, drip of clues eventually leads to not only who committed the crime, but why.

Third Grade Homework

Most school days I pick up our eight-year-old grandson after school. He stays at our house until his mom or dad comes to get him later in the afternoon. The order of business when he arrives is snack, homework and then play. His teacher gives him a list of homework topics that include reading an article and summarizing it, going on the computer for a reading and math exercise and then reading a book of his choice for twenty minutes. This takes about fifty minutes. I can’t remember having homework when I was in third grade, but then again, I’m an old guy.

Good News

I’ve just signed a contract for a middle grade mystery novel. The title is The Adventures of Sure Luck Holmes. Sure Luck is an amateur detective in the fifth grade in the fictional California town of Londonberry. The narrator and his assistant is his friend Johanna Watson. Sure Luck gets his nickname from solving cases often by luck but not exactly getting the solution right.

Short Stories

When I started writing in 2001, I wrote a number of short stories. Since then, I’ve primarily written novel length stories, but periodically, I write a short story when an idea strikes me. I’ve had more novels published than short stories, but I still enjoy both types of writing.

Presenting to Book Groups

I enjoy the opportunity to present to book groups. I do this in person and through Zoom. I belong to three book groups and like reading books I otherwise might not have known about. Next week I’ll be doing a Zoom presentation to a book group of lessons I’ve learned as an author.

Men of Mystery

One of my favorite events is the annual Men of Mystery one-day conference. This year 31 authors will give one-minute presentations along with guest speakers, lunch and a book signing. It will take place on Saturday, November 4, at the Grand in Long Beach, CA.

Readers Panel at Bouchercon

Being an author, one of my favorite panels at the Bouchercon mystery conference is the Readers Panel. Most of the panels feature authors, but I like hearing readers’ experiences, likes, dislikes and recommendations. This panel featured Kat Tromp, John Thomas Bychowski, Grace Kashida, Nikki Bonanni and Dru Ann Love. Some of the panelists read hundreds of books a year.

Senior Sleuth Panel at Bouchercon

We had a great turnout for the Senior Sleuth panel at Bouchercon in San Diego. In preparation I tried an experiment: I went on ChatGPT and typed in “senior sleuth jokes.” The AI search engine returned with nine jokes. I used two of them on the panel:

1.     Why did the retired detective become a gardener? Because they wanted to keep digging up the truth, one plot at a time!

2.     Why did the old detective prefer solving crimes during the winter? Because they could always rely on cold cases to keep them busy!

Two observations:

1.     ChatGPT wants to be gender neutral.

2.     It likes explanation points.

Here’s a picture of me with the panel members Steph Broadribb, Ellen Kirschman, Lisa Q. Mathews and Anna St. John

Mystery Conferences

I have regularly been going to Left Coast Crime, a conference for mystery authors and mystery fans. I have also attended Malice Domestic several times and Bouchercon a few times. Bouchercon is the largest of the mystery conferences and is going on in San Diego right now. It typically has over a thousand attendees.

Historical Mystery Novel

I’m now in the editing phase with Mystic Publishers for my historical mystery novel, Murder in the Museo Kircheriano. It’s scheduled to be published March 5, 2024.

Strange circumstances surrounding a dead body found in Father Athanasius Kircher’s museum of unusual artifacts in Rome in 1656 lead to a web of intrigue involving a mysterious nephews circle. Using his eclectic and eccentric skills, Athanasius Kircher, known as “the last man to know everything,” teams up with Queen Christina of Sweden, one of the most powerful women in Europe, to solve the mysterious death.

Presentations

Whenever one of my books is published, I develop a new presentation to give at book events. This way people who have asked me to speak or who have listened to me speak before will hear new material. With the recent release of Last Gasp Motel, my new presentation is about the gift of being an author: my experience writing about quirky characters and meeting interesting people at mystery conferences and book events.

Author Speed Dating at Bouchercon 2023

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll be participating in Author Speed Dating at Bouchercon 2023 in San Diego on Friday, Sept. 1 at 11:35 AM. For those of you not familiar with this event, I tag team with another author and we go table-to-table each giving a two-minute pitch about our latest books. We take turns giving the presentations and then move on to the next table. By the end of the session, we could give each other’s talks. I always give out postcards about my books as well. It’s a good way to expose readers to our books.

When retired maintenance man Frank Sinatra finds Darell Willows’s body in the swimming pool of the Last Gasp Motel in Omnipodge, California, Frank must deal with the responding police officer making wisecracks about his name while trying to figure out what happened.

Detective Duke Lambert arrives and quizzes Frank. Frank agrees to help the detective, whom he has worked with before. Suspects include the residents of the Last Gasp and the son and daughter-in-law of the unpopular victim.

The aging residents are a quirky lot including chain-smoking manager Hedda Robinson; kleptomaniac Carolyn Bryant; “Accident” Al Utley, who causes traffic accidents and then collects money from the other drivers; dog-poop vigilante Pat Pope known as “Mr. Poop”; good Samaritan Mira Neighbors; potassium-obsessed, banana-chomping Banny Zamora; flower petal–scattering Gladys Terry; womanizer Caruthers Quinter; authority-avoiding Varenka; and conspiracy-theory nut Ethel Ogden.

Each of the suspects argued recently with the deceased—and all of them have reasons to want him dead. Grandma and Grandpa Camp

Last week was our 7-year-old grandsons first week of summer vacation. He spent the days with us, and we did a lot of fun activities during the week including miniature golf, four new parks/playgrounds one afternoon, a trip to the beach to collect shells, a visit to the library to check out his first books, splashing in a wading pool in our neighborhood park, swimming in our community swimming pool and practicing riding his bike. This week he is attending a day camp program through his elementary school.

Useful Aids Following Joint Replacement Surgery

Following knee and hip replacement surgeries over the last year, I have come to use some important devices to aid me in everyday activity. When getting dressed, there are two helpful devices I’m using: a sock-puller-uper to get my socks on (a plastic cuff, insert in the sock, then put the foot in the cuff and use cords to pull the sock over my foot) and a long shoehorn to get shoes on. The other essential device is a grabber to reach things on the ground since it’s still hard for me to bend over. With these three devices, I’m ready to take on the world again.

Dumb Dad jokes

I continue to be a fan of dumb dad jokes. These are jokes we dads tell to our kids and grandkids. I post some of these on Facebook, and other people share their puns with me. Here’s a recent one I received. What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. You get the idea.

Event at Palos Verdes, CA, Library

Jeri Fonté would like to invite SWM and Surfwriters to an

In-Person Meeting, at the Palos Verdes Library,

Saturday, June. 3, 2023 at 2 to 4PM

Open to all, bring your writer friends

Our guest speaker will be Mike Befeler

Mike Befeler will give a presentation titled, "Lessons Learned as an Author," about his experiences starting to write later in life. He will also discuss his latest mystery novel, "Old Detectives Home."

Imagine a retirement home populated with residents such as an aging Hercule Poirot and a dementia-suffering Sherlock Holmes and run by staff including Art Doyle, Dash Hammett and Dot Sayers. In this light-hearted spoof of the mystery genre, every character is either a namesake of a person from the mystery writing world or a character from a mystery novel. On anything but a dark and stormy night, a dead body is found. The staff managers find themselves unable to control the unruly old detectives. Mix in clues and red herrings galore as the cast of suspects investigate each other. Hold on to your rockers as the top detectives of all time reunite at Old Detectives Home to solve their most difficult whodunit—but first without killing each other.

Mike Befeler is the author of nineteen books including six novels in the Paul Jacobson Geezer-lit Mystery Series ("Retirement Homes Are Murder," "Living with Your Kids Is Murder," "Senior Moments Are Murder," "Cruising in Your Eighties Is Murder," "Care Homes Are Murder," "Nursing Homes Are Murder"), two of which were finalist for The Lefty Award for best humorous mystery. He has ten other published mystery novels: "Old Detectives Home," "Unstuff Your Stuff," "Death of a Scam Artist," "The V V Agency," "The Back Wing," "The Front Wing," "The Mystery of the Dinner Playhouse," "Murder on the Switzerland Trail," "Court Trouble and Paradise Court"; an international thriller, "The Tesla Legacy"; a non-fiction book, "The Best Chicken Thief in All of Europe"; and a novella, "Coronavirus Daze."  He’s past-president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and now lives in Lakewood, California, with his wife, Wendy.

Fourteenth Anniversary of the Publication of Living with Your Kids Is Murder

Today is the fourteenth anniversary of the release of my second book in the Paul Jacobson Geezer-lit Mystery Series, Living with Your Kids Is Murder. As Paul ends up suspiciously close to a bank robbery, kidnapping and drug bust, his granddaughter Jennifer helps him track down the real perpetrators. Paul juggles two girlfriends, experiences the quirks of old age romance and must find a way to stay alive when he confronts a murderer.

I’m available to give presentations to service organizations, libraries and book clubs.

Bouchercon 2023

After a successful Left Coast Crime Conference in Tucson, I’m ready for my next mystery conference for mystery fans and authors: Bouchercon 2023 in San Diego August 30 – September 3. This is a large conference with typically 1500 – 2000 attendees. This will be the fourth time I’ve attended a Bouchercon Conference, and I’ll be able to drive there from the LA area.

A Successful Left Coast Crime Conference

Last week’s Left Coast Crime Conference in Tucson was a great success. Approximately 500 mystery writers and fans gathered to hear panels, discuss mystery novels and chat. I participated in the Author Speed Dating during which I traveled from table to table with fellow mystery author Alan Orloff. We each gave the attendees at 18 tables a pitch about our latest mystery novels.

I was on two panels. The first was titled, How Do You Know What’s Funny, with Catriona McPherson, Leslie Karst, Ed Lin and D. R. Ransdell. It was a hoot, and we kept the audience entertained.

My second panel was titled, Senior Sleuths, with Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Barna W. Donovan, Ellen Kirschman and Susan McCormick. Since I write primarily about older characters, this was an enjoyable opportunity to share our experiences.

I hosted the Meet the New Authors Breakfast where each debut author gave a one-minute pitch on the most important thing readers should know about their new mystery novel.

On Saturday evening, I co-hosted a table at the awards banquet with fellow Encircle Publications author B. J. Magnani.

All-in-all it was a busy four days with many enjoyable conversations.

Meet the New Authors Breakfast at the Left Coast Crime Conference

I have the honor of hosting the Meet the New Authors Breakfast at the Left Coast Crime Conference on Friday, March 17, in Tucson. Sisters in Crime is sponsoring the breakfast.

We have 17 new mystery authors whose books run from cozy to suspense to thriller and take place in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Minnesota, England, and on an Atlantic cruise ship.  The criterion is that their first mystery/crime/thriller must be published within 2022 and up to March 19, 2023.

Why do we have this program? To pay tribute to new authors who have run the gauntlet of rejection, agents, editors or self-publishing to get books into the hands of loyal fans.

A little history. The first Meet the New Authors Breakfast was at LCC2008 in Denver. The minimum number of new authors was 2009 on the Big Island of Hawaii at 12. The maximum was 2014 at 44. Originally, we called it the New Authors Breakfast, but people thought it was only for new authors to come to breakfast.

Each new author will have up to 1 minute to tell the attendees the most important thing they should know about the debut novel.

It will be a busy time, but I always look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Sixth Anniversary of the Publication of The Tesla Legacy

This is the sixth anniversary of the publication of The Tesla Legacy. Nikola Tesla was a dichotomy. He had a brilliant mind and could invent in that mind and go to prototype without a blueprint. He gave us alternating current technology for the lights in our homes and offices. But he was also on the autism spectrum with many weird quirks. When he went to a restaurant, he insisted on having multiples of three napkins (3, 6, 9), and he didn’t like being touched.

My international thriller, The Tesla Legacy, is a modern-day story of an Afghani terrorist and a secret government agent trying to get their hands on a weapon of mass destruction designed by Tesla but includes a lot of background about Nikola Tesla, the historical figure.

The Tesla Legacy is available in print, e-book and audio editions:

Picture a retired mathematics professor and conspiracy nut with a butt-kicking, surrogate-daughter sidekick. Elmore Kranz bombards the police with his predictions of disaster until one of them actually happens, to the point that he’s implicated in the plot. Even with the assistance of his one ally, rookie cop Brittney Chase, people start dying around Elmore as attempts are made on his life. Following up on inventions from eccentric genius, Nikola Tesla, Elmore and Brittney team up to solve a hundred-year-old puzzle.

Where Has Customer Service Gone?

I’ve seen many examples of companies treating existing customers as second-class citizens. When I was in the business world, the emphasis was on keeping customers by providing good service. Today, I experience a lack of interest in providing good customer service. The most recent example is a bank where we have a certificate of deposit. The CD has come due, so I checked with the bank on current rates for renewal. They gave me a lower rate than a rate they were advertising in the lobby. The banker explained that the advertised rate was for “new customers.” Voila. As an existing customer, I was being treated as a second-class citizen. You would think they would give me the best rate to retain me as a customer. No deal. I closed the account and moved my money to another bank that gave the best rates to everyone.

Writers Critique Groups

Since I began writing in 2001, I have joined a number of writers critique groups. These are groups of writers who give feedback to each other on their manuscripts to help improve their writing. The first one I attended was with a co-worker. Then I was introduced to a group of mystery writers who were very helpful in getting me started as a mystery writer. I’ve also been in general groups that have writers representing multiple genres. As well as in-person critique groups, I’ve also participated in on-line groups. For a number of years now, I’ve not been in a critique group, but I just signed up for a critique group sponsored by Sisters in Crime. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

Reading Patterns

Do you have a regular reading pattern? I go through cycles. When I’m busy with family activities or writing activities, I may not read that much during the day. Other times, I have a relaxing day and read for many hours. Since I’m currently awaiting edits on two books in the publishing cycle, I’ve had a chance to do more reading. Once I receive edit suggestions from my publishers, editing will be my primary activity.

Sixteenth Anniversary of My First Published Novel, Retirement Homes Are Murder

Today is the sixteenth anniversary of the release of my first published mystery novel, Retirement Homes Are Murder. Imagine yourself waking up in a retirement home, not remembering anything from the day before and being accused of murder.  Or consider a male Miss Marple enmeshed in a light-hearted Memento.

When crotchety octogenarian Paul Jacobson discovers a body wedged in a retirement home trash chute, he must become an amateur sleuth to clear himself as a murder suspect while struggling with the problems of his short-term memory loss and being stuck living with a bunch of old people.  As Paul’s snooping gets him in trouble with the local police and the retirement home administration, he meets eccentric residents, develops a new friendship, experiences the quirks of old age romance and must face his biggest fear in order to escape from a murderer intent upon a repeat performance.

I’m available to give presentations to service organizations, libraries and book groups.
